Strengthening Women’s Position in the World- Celebrating International Women’s Day

Ruma Mehta
Faculty, Surya School of Business Management

Starting with the opening words of great Mahatma Gandhi:

“Woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacity…..
If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man’s superior….
If non-violence is the law of our being, the future is with women……”

DSC06529

It is right to say that position of women is improving with leap and bounds. If we talk about the past scenario, it was like that the woman were not allowed to come out of their homes, talk to any person else than their family members, were forced to do things whether they like or not and many more. But today time has changed; it is humanizing their power making them more strong and powerful.
Even there is celebration of Women day both at national and international level so as to make them realize their values and importance in the society. Upcoming is International Women Day on 8th March, 2014 and it will be celebrated with great pomp and show at different platforms. International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
.
Women really deserve this celebration because it’s their confidence only that help them to perform best at all points of time. From our Indian society only we have lot many examples of Women giving their excellent performance in all spheres.
To share some of few examples we have Mrs. Shikha Sharma the Managing Director & CEO of Axis Bank . She is the Chairperson of Axis Asset Management Company Limited, Chairperson of Axis Bank UK limited, Axis Capital Limited and Axis Private Equity Limited. Moving ahead we have Ms Chandra Kochhar working as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ICICI Bank Limited, India’s second-largest bank and the largest in the private sector. She is widely known for her role in shaping the retail banking sector in India and for her leadership of the ICICI Group, as well as her contributions to various forums in India and globally. This shows that women are really stepping ahead of men. They are getting opportunities to excel in life.
To recognize the spirit of womanhood, Surya World also celebrates Women’s Day with great fervor. This is the platform where female staff members are given a chance to show case their talent and represent themselves in various fields. The Institute works hard to show respect towards women employees. This not only boosts up their morale but also makes them feel strong and enthusiastic.

REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT: BECOME AN ECO- WARRIOR

CARBON FOOTPRINTS

Neha Mehandiratta

Faculty, Surya School of Business Management

India is now the world’s third biggest emitter of CO2, after China and the US….The fact seems alarming, but it is true!

A ‘carbon footprint’ is a measure of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with an activity or group of activities. Nearly everything that we do produces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions either directly or indirectly. The most important greenhouse gas produced by human activities is carbon dioxide. Direct GHG emissions sources are often easy to identify – for example burning fossil fuels for electricity generation, heating.

India and China are among the world’s biggest contributors to fossil fuel emissions with India’s carbon dioxide discharge increasing by a whopping 7.7 percent last year

“Based on estimates of economic activity in 2013, emissions are set to rise 2.1 percent in 2013 to reach 36 billion tones of CO2,” the annual analysis by Global Carbon Project reported.

As responsible citizens, we should make individual efforts to reduce our carbon footprint on the environment. Here are some easy ways in which we can contribute towards the environment:

  • Walk whenever possible
  • Use a fan
  • largely avoid using the air-conditioner
  • Drink lot of water
  • Use light clothes
  • Save water (keep tap on a trickle and not a strong stream)
  • Use bath water to water the plants
  • Try to grow food and vegetables yourself
  • Use internet & Skype whenever possible for work, reduce travelling
  • Encourage public mode of transport
  • Avoid printing, if need be, use both sides of the paper
  • Try to consult reference books before using online search engines

Surya World was recently awarded Green Flag by Go Green International Organisation for their efforts towards contributing to reducing CO2 in the environment. The lush green lawns of Surya World speak tones about this mission. Click here to experience the  beautiful green lawns at Surya World.

Advertising through the internet helps to build relationships between consumers and brands. It is very a useful means for the companies to advertise their products and services online. The targeted people in a particular country or state can easily surf their likings or their intrest regarding a particular product. Auctions through internet have come up as a fruitful business. Internet marketing ties the creative and technical aspects of the internet, together with designing and development of the product and sales. Internet marketing and online advertising efforts are usually used in combination with traditional types of advertising like radio, television, newspapers and magazines.

bhangra Punjabi folk music is highly rhythmic, and very diverse. The western region is the home of styles like dhoola and mahiya, while the popular boli style is performed different across the region. The vocals are another integral part of Punjabi music, as are instruments like the dhol, tumbi, dhad sarangi, algoza and Ektara

The Birthplace of Bhangra

The birthplace of Bhangra, Punjab is a region extending over part of Northern India and North eastern Pakistan. Translated, the name “Punjab” means the “Land of Five Rivers.” The people of the Punjab are called Punjabis and they speak a language called Punjabi. The three main religions in the area are Sikhism, Hinduism, and Islam. Around the time of the 15th Century, Guru Nanak Dev founded the Sikh religion, which quickly came to prominence in the region. The 19th Century saw the beginning of British rule, which led to the emergence of several heroic freedom fighters, the subject of many Bhangra songs. Finally, the Punjab was split between Pakistan and India at the end of British rule in 1947. This partitioning resulted in a large migration of Punjabis into the United Kingdom, which eventually led to the emergence of Bhangra in Western clubs and dance halls Bhangra is a lively form of music and dance that originated in the Punjab region in Southeast Asia. As many Bhangra lyrics reflect the long and often tumultuous history of the Punjab, knowledge of Punjabi history offers important insights into the meaning of the music. Moreover, during the last thirty years, Bhangra has enjoyed a surge in popularity worldwide, both in traditional form and as a fusion with genres such as hip-hop, house, and reggae.

Bhangra Instruments

Bhangra Today

Bhangra has come a long way in the 20th Century and has recently taken the entertainment industry by storm. In the 1970s and 1980s, many Punjabi singers from Southeast Asia and the United Kingdom emerged, setting the stage for Bhangra to become a hot new trend in dance music. Modern Bhangra artists, in addition to recording and performing traditional Bhangra, have also fused Bhangra with other music genres, such as hip-hop, reggae, house, and drum-and-bass. Surya World has a vibrant student team of Bhangra and Malwai Gidda who are bringing laurels to us wherever they perform. At Surya World, we provide students with a platform to showcase their talents in a number of ways. We organize techno- cultural events and students are also encouraged to participate in various such events being organized elsewhere.

An important method to improve quality is the establishment and meeting of international quality standards. International organization for standardization (ISO 9000),a committee formed under the chairmanship of Canada, worked to produce an International Quality Standard and is the international set of standards documented by members of ISO Technical Committee and is presented in the form of ISO 9000 series. The objective of this standard was to develop a single standard for operations and management of the quality. The ISO 9000 series are guidelines related to the design, development, production, testing, and servicing of products.

ISO-9000 standard specially concentrates on the application of Total Quality Management (TQM) Systems. The ISO standard was published in 1987. Later in 1988, Indian Body of Standards (Bureau of Indian Standards, BIS) adopted these standards. As India is also founder member of BIS, it developed equivalent standard as BIS 14000series.

On January 1, 1993, European Community member countries adopted ISO standards. Today all of the organization has to pass through this standardization.

ISO 9000- Deals with the guidelines for selecting a model.

ISO 9001- A quality assurance model to ensure conformance to specified requirements during design, development, installation and servicing.

ISO 9002- A quality assurance model to ensure conformance to specified requirements during production, installation and servicing.

ISO 9003- A quality assurance model to ensure conformance to specified requirements during final test and inspection.

ISO 9004- For internal use only, not to be used in contractual situation, it contains guidelines to the technical, administrative and human factors affecting the product and service quality. Listing the essential elements such as, establishing a quality system for marketing design, procurement, production, measurement, post production, material control, documentation, safety and use of statistical methods.

Tips for Developing Leadership Skills

Pooja Mahajan

Faculty, Surya School of Business Management

Leadership means the action of leading a group of people or an organization, or the ability to do this. Leadership is vital to survival and success. Leadership always has some focus on bringing about a better future. Leaders are necessarily innovators. Leadership has a direct cause and effect relationship upon organizations and their success. Leaders determine values, culture, change tolerance and employee motivation. I believe, in order to develop Leadership skills, as a leader we must be willing to acknowledge that, developing it is not an accomplishment – it’s a never-ending process. Being a leader isn’t easy – it requires commitment for the long haul. It’s not something we can just accomplish and then move on. Being a leader it requires hard work, sacrifice, commitment and a willingness to grow ourselves. There are some things which Excellent Leaders do constantly such as they are committed to learning. They make taking time off a priority. They believe in themselves and their abilities. Self-doubt and low self-esteem are stumbling blocks. They are visionary and help others to embrace their vision.

Great leaders set goals in some way or another. They mentor others and have a mentor or two. Leaders are honest, hard-working and conduct all their business dealing with integrity. True leaders genuinely care about people. They make time for them and they are passionate about helping others develop their true potential.

While talking about Surya World, we organize Guest Lectures by industrialists with a view to provide an opportunity to the management students to interact and learn from successful and eminent Business Leaders.  And they interact with the students and shared their views like what qualities they are expected from the young generation. And also provide them some tips to improve their skills.
